Fall Must Reads
I love autumn: the Starbucks fall themed drinks, the vibrant leaves, and the new books. The best books tend to come out in the fall. This year the literary gods have blessed us and we’ll see books from Jonathan Safran Foer, Ali Smith, and Zadie Smith. I’ve been excited about these releases for months now. I’m not alone, friends from Israel to France to Rhode Island have pre-ordered Foer’s novel. So here are my Fall Must Reads:
Here I am by Jonathan Safran Foer. His novel examines a fractured family, Jewish identity, and Israel. I read an excerpt in The New Yorker and was immediately taken with Foer’s engaging prose. To date his work has inspired a ballet, Tree of Codes as well as a film, Everything is Illuminated, so his upcoming novel is bound for success. Release date: 6th September 2016. UK Publisher: Hamish Hamilton. US Publisher: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. You can pre-order it here.
Autumn by Ali Smith. She is one of my favourite authors. Her books are always inventive and she incorporates art themes. I am in awe of Ali Smith’s prose, her fascinating characters, and brilliant plots. I know that Autumn won’t disappoint. UK Publisher: Hamish Hamilton. This book is released the 20th of October 2016. Available for pre-order here.
Swing Time by Zadie Smith. I’ve thought about this novel since it was announced last year. It’s about two brown girls who dream of being dancers, but only one has the talent to reach her goals. The novel is set in North West London and West Africa. We’re still months away as the release date is the 15th of November 2016. You can pre-order it here.
I am eager to read all three novels, but as someone who spent the better part of my life in a ballet studio, I am especially curious to read how Zadie Smith interprets dance. Each of these books have their own charm and I look forward to reading Here I am this September.
